Fun, but I'm confused why this ended up on the list of Best Mystery novels over some of Westlake's other, tighter books. While technically a murder mystery, much of this book is a crazy romp through New York c.1960, with unusual characters, witty banter and hilarious situations. It would have been more impressive 50 years ago when all of the cons in it were still less than widely known, but the story still holds up even with the now outdated material. And when his Uncle Matt dies and leaves him $300,000, he attracts the worst kind of attention—from people who’d love to separate him from that money. And, it’s a compelling character study: what happens whe. vi. As far as E's go this one is funny, particularly the beginning which had me laughing while listening.
