I think the film has its flaws (the love story involving the lead character doesn't go anywhere, and the subplot with O' Toole's daughter just seems to have been shoehorned to show that the events of this movie change him into a better man. It's a great contrast to his heavier pieces such as Lion In Winter; O'Toole even does a bit of self-parody here as he pokes fun at his own public image.
